All my jewellery pieces are made individually in my Wairarapa studio. I am lucky to live in this region where so many talented artisans ply their craft.
After years of collecting and enjoying artisan jewellery, I started to design and create it myself. I trained in France on using a fairly new process. My pieces start out as metal clay in which microscopic particles of silver or bronze are suspended in an organic binder. This creates a pliable material that can be moulded, sculpted and textured. Then I kiln-fire the pieces at very high temperatures to fuse the metal particles into a solid metal. This process adds stresses and strains to the material as it forms, and the artist needs great skill and judgement to complete each piece. These factors make each piece unique.
I work with pure silver (sometimes called ‘fine silver’). It has a bright, white lustre and is less prone to tarnishing or irritating the wearer’s skin. The bronze I work with has a distinct gold tone and is durable and versatile. It combines olde-world charm with contemporary style.
Currently, I am very influenced by the possibilities in textures and geometric shapes.
