Terry Wreford Hann is a highly respected New Zealand photographer whose career spans decades of commercial and conservation work, with a unique and enduring focus on aquatic life. He began his photographic journey at the age of 19 at the National Publicity Studios in Wellington, eventually rising to the position of senior photographer. Since then, Terry has established a successful photography and video production business with his partner and creative collaborator, Esther Bunning.
Renowned for his expertise in fish imagery, Terry created the iconic New Zealand Seafood poster in the mid-1990s. Featuring over 75 marine species photographed over several years, the poster became a familiar sight in fish-and-chip shops across the country. More recently, Terry has turned his lens inland, dedicating four years to capturing the remarkable diversity of Aotearoa’s freshwater fish.
His latest project—the Waitī Project—is both a visual and educational initiative. At its heart is a beautifully composed A1-sized poster titled Freshwater Life of Aotearoa, which showcases endemic, native, and introduced freshwater fish species. Each fish is presented in striking photographic detail, accompanied by both English and te reo Māori names. A QR code on the poster links to a growing online educational hub filled with classroom resources, scientific insights, and cultural perspectives. The project is designed to inspire curiosity, foster ecological empathy, and spark classroom conversations around freshwater conservation.
Terry holds the distinction of being a Grand Master of Photography with the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography. His work seamlessly bridges art and science, using compelling imagery to deepen public understanding of aquatic ecosystems and support national conservation efforts.
Terry’s open studio is shared with his partner, Esther Bunning, as well as jewellery artist Sandra Schmid.
